Rhys beats pal Gruffudd to Dylan role

IOAN GRUFFUDD yesterday revealed how his best friend Matthew Rhys beat him to the leading role in the new Dylan Thomas film.
But the affable Welsh star said, “The best man got the job” and said it wasn’t the first time the former schoolfriends and flatmates had auditioned for the same part.
And as if to show there are no hard feelings between them, Gruffudd revealed Rhys would be one of his two best men when he ties the knot with actress girlfriend Alice Evans in September in an unusual bilingual wedding in Mexico.
Rhys beat off tough competition to land the role of Swansea poet Thomas in The Edge Of Love, which has recently been filming in Pembrokeshire.
The film also stars Sienna Miller as his wife Caitlin and Keira Knightley as family friend Vera Killick.
“Over the years both Matthew and I have sat outside audition rooms together,” said Gruffudd, 33, whose latest Fantastic Four movie opens next week.
“To be perfectly honest with you, he is the perfect candidate for the job. He looks a lot more like Dylan Thomas and sounds exactly like him. He’s absolutely perfect for the role. I’d rather it go to someone I know.
“It’s a lovely, lovely script and both Keira and Sienna are doing a superb job as well.”
While Rhys has already admitted that he feels the pressure of playing one of Wales’ most famous sons, his friend has every confidence in him.
“I don’t think he has anything to worry about,” said Gruffudd, who starred alongside Rhys in the film Very Annie Mary.
“It’s tough playing a character who existed, especially one who was with us in the not too distant past. But Matthew is the best man for the job.”
If his schedule allows, Gruffudd also hopes to support his friend, who he met at school in Cardiff, when The Edge Of Love is released next year. “I hope to be there at the premiere,” he said.
You'll find a bit more Ioan-related interview in the given link, if anyone's interested. I'd wondered if they'd competed for the role. That answers that burning question.
