Link Rhys Darfur Plea May 27 2007 Wales on Sunday DYLAN Thomas actor Matthew Rhys today backs an appeal to save lives in war-torn Africa. The Cardiff leading man, who is filming The Edge of Love with Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller, is supporting the Disasters Emergency Committee Cymru campaign raising money for the people of Darfur, Chad and the Central African Republic. Paralympian Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson fronted Thursday's TV launch in response to what is being called one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters. With 4.5 million people affected by the ongoing conflict, the looming rains are bringing the risk of deadly conditions like diarrhoea and malaria, especially for children, pregnant mothers and the elderly. Aid agencies need to bolster life-saving food and medicine stocks before the downpours hit any time within the next four weeks. Matthew, 32, said: "Millions of people are suffering in Darfur and Chad but we can all make a difference by donating to the appeal. I hope that the first DEC Cymru appeal will show the generosity of people in Wales. Every donation will help, and together we can help save thousands of lives." To help, phone the 24-hour seven-day donation line on 0870 6060900 or send a cheque made payable to Darfur & Chad Crisis to DEC Darfur and Chad Crisis Appeal, PO Box 999, London EC3A 3AA. You can also make a payment at any high street bank or post office, quoting Freepay 1457.

One voice won't stop genocide, but that's no excuse to remain silent.

This is wonderful. As an activist to end the genocide in Darfur, this makes me very pleased with Matthew.
Just this past Tuesday, I organized meetings with Rhode Island's (USA) two United States Senators to lobby them regarding Darfur.
In the week of Global Days for Darfur, April 23, 2007, we had over 400 events about Darfur in the USA and there were Darfur events in 40 countries. I organized the only event in Rhode Island.
The grassroots efforts around the world are making a difference. The genocide is over four years old and President Omar al-Bashir has jerked the chain of the international community in an on-going cycle of "yes, I'll allow U.N. Peacekeepers" followed by "No, I won't allow U.N. Peacekeepers. We're looking to pressure China who has supported Omar al-Bashir and in reality kept the genocide going. The Olympics in China give us a great platform to exercise this pressure.
So, I look forward to learning how this effort turns out in Wales. Good for Matthew.
